Surprising Social Media Stats: Mobile Only Facebook Dominates

At their Q3 earnings call at the end of October 2013, Facebook announced that 48 percent of users on a given day are only accessing it from mobile.  Nearly half of their revenue was also earned from mobile ads as well.  Given the trends, those numbers will be significantly higher by the time you read this.

What does this mean for you?

It's not only crucial to consider how your content looks in mobile feeds, but you should be catering content specifically for those platforms.  Small screens on mobile devices encourage users to scroll through their streams of info at an ever increasing rate.  Keep your message simple, straight forward, and intriguing.  Short copy and large, attractive photos are a must.

Surprising Social Media Stats: Guess Who's on Twitter?

As stated in the headline, it may actually come as a shock to you that older people (we won't call them old), are flocking to Twitter.  In fact, the fastest growing population of Twitter users in 2013 were aged 55-64!  No longer are 140 characters limited to emoji crazed teens.  Some numbers to chew on:

  • The 55-64 Twitter demo has grown 79% since 2012.
  • The 45–54 year age bracket is the fastest growing for both Facebook and Google+.
  • For Facebook this group has leaped 46%, for Google+ it has jumped an even higher 56%.

What does this mean?

One thing that pops out is how social media is now at scale.  It's no longer an option to ignore social media strategy if you plan on creating new business and staying relevant.  Your product or service has an audience that is paying attention to the content companies are publishing on social platforms.

A solid social media strategy is needed for these age brackets if they fit into your target demographic.  Since age is a factor in people's interests, it's important to create content for a wider audience.
